About hiv / aids

HIV, human immunodeficiency virus, is the virus that if left untreated can lead to the disease AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). HIV attacks and kills the cells of the immune system, in particular the CD4 cells (also known as T cells). The immune system of the host is thus weakened and if untreated the person becomes increasingly vulnerable to infections or infection-related cancers. AIDS is the final stage of the HIV infection. At this stage the number of remaining CD4 cells is very low, the immune system is badly affected and has grown unable to fight off infections and diseases [1].

The human body cannot get rid of the virus completely and there is no effective cure for HIV, however, when promptly and properly treated, patients can live a healthy life and the chances of the disease being transmitted can be lowered [1].

At the end of 2015 approximately 36.7 million people worldwide were living with HIV / AIDS, of these 2.1 million infections happened in 2015 [3] and 1.8 million were children below 15 years of age. Globally, only 60 % of people with HIV know their status, however the number of people living with HIV and receiving treatment (antiretroviral therapy (ART)) is increasing. As of June 2016, the count was up to 18.2 million globally and the goal for 2020 is to bring the 15.8 million in June 2015, 7.5 million in 2010, and less than one million in 2000 [1].

The above products may be suitable for treating patients with HIV / AIDS or being at high risk of infection. We recommend that you discuss the suitability of possible treatment options with your doctor. For further information please contact our support team at support@thesocialmedwork.com.
