About ovarian, fallopian tubes and peritoneal cancer

Ovarian epithelial cancer, fallopian tube cancer, and primary peritoneal cancer are diseases in which cancer cells form in the tissue covering the ovary or lining of the fallopian tube or peritoneum [1]. The ovaries are the female reproductive glands which make eggs and female hormones. Usually, ovarian cancers are differentiated into two classes: epithelial ovarian cancer (also referred to as ovarian carcinoma), which arise from the ovary's surface cells, accounting for approximately 90 % of primary ovarian tumours; and non-epithelial ovarian cancer, from other tissues within the ovary [2].  The fallopian tubes are a pair of long tubes, one on each side of the uterus through which eggs pass from the ovaries to the uterus. Cancer can begin at the end of the fallopian tube near the ovary and spreads to the ovary. The peritoneum is the tissue that covers organs in the abdomen. A cancer is defined as primary peritoneal if it is formed in the peritoneum and has not spread from another part of the body. Cancer can begin in the peritoneum and spread to the ovary [3].

Ovarian epithelial cancer, fallopian tube cancer, and primary peritoneal cancer form in the same type of tissue and are often treated in the same way. Some ovarian, fallopian tube, and primary peritoneal cancers are caused by inherited gene mutations [1].

The above products may be suitable for treating patients with ovarian epithelial cancer, fallopian tube cancer, or primary peritoneal cancer. We recommend that you discuss the suitability of possible treatment options with your doctor. For further information please contact our support team at support@thesocialmedwork.com .
